The Ins and Outs of
Inlays and Onlays
An Onlay or Inlay is very similar to a large filling, but it is made out of different materials, and applications typically require more than one visit. Onlays or Inlays are made from porcelain, titanium, or gold.

What is the Procedure for Receiving an Inlay or Onlay?
At the first visit, the dentist will apply a local anesthetic to numb the gums surrounding the decaying tooth. Then, he or she will gently remove the damaged portion of the tooth, leaving as much healthy tooth structure as possible. Finally, the dentist will take a mold of the tooth and send the results to a lab where your new onlay or inlay will be created.
At Platinum Dental, we want to ensure our patients receive the highest quality of comfortable care. At the second visit, the onlay or inlay will be placed in the mouth to ensure a perfect fit before it is permanently bonded to the tooth.
What’s the
Difference?
Fillings vs. Onlay/Inlays?
- Fillings are typically made of plastic resin or silver
- Inlays and Onlays preserve as much of the original tooth as possible
- Inlays and Onlays are more effective at keeping bacteria out
- A tailored fit makes Inlays and Onlays easier to clean
- Inlays and Onlays won’t discolor as resin fillings are known to occasionally do
